World Installed Record 647 GW of Solar Power in 2025

The world just proved it's serious about clean energy, installing a record-breaking 647 gigawatts of solar power in 2025. That's an 11 percent jump from the year before and represents enough capacity to power roughly 130 million homes.

China led the charge, adding 378 gigawatts of solar panels in a single year. Most of that happened in just five months as the country raced to meet new pricing reforms for renewable energy projects.

India also had a breakthrough year, installing 49 gigawatts of solar capacity compared to 32 gigawatts the previous year. Unlike China, which expects to slow down in 2026, India plans to speed up with projections showing even more installations this year.

The numbers tell an incredible acceleration story. Global solar capacity reached 2.9 terawatts by the end of 2025 and likely crossed 3 terawatts shortly after. Just two years earlier, the world had only 2 terawatts, meaning we doubled our total solar power in record time.

The Ripple Effect

This solar boom is delivering benefits far beyond cleaner air. Since conflict began in the Middle East, the electricity generated from existing solar and wind farms has replaced nearly 330 terawatt hours of natural gas generation. That translates to more than 40 billion dollars in savings.

These savings highlight something crucial about renewable energy. Unlike oil and gas that must be imported from often unstable regions, solar panels generate power right where they're installed. Countries are discovering that investing in solar means investing in their own energy security.
