Young Arizona Softball Team Wins District Championship

When 10-year-old Zarina Badilla stepped onto the pitcher's mound for the final out Wednesday night, her team was clinging to a one-run lead and the championship was on the line.

She struck out the last batter, sending San Xavier Little League to the state tournament with a heart-stopping 7-6 win over Copper Hills in the District 12 championship game. The victory capped off a complete-game performance where Badilla struck out 12 batters across six innings while also going 3 for 3 at the plate with a double.

The game stayed tight from the first pitch. Both teams traded runs early, with the score knotted at 4-4 heading into the fifth inning.

That's when San Xavier made its move. Shortstop Sophia Auhl crushed a two-run double that put her team ahead 7-4, giving them the cushion they needed down the stretch.

Copper Hills didn't quit. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Alexia Ortega ripped a two-run triple with two outs to pull within one run at 7-6, bringing the tying run to third base.

But Badilla stayed calm under pressure and recorded the final strikeout to seal the championship. Manager Alex Martinez got doused with water as his players celebrated their hard-fought victory.

The Ripple Effect

This win represents more than just a trophy for these young athletes. San Xavier will now compete in the state tournament starting Monday in Avondale, where they'll face Phoenix Cactus Foothills in the opening round.

The team showed remarkable resilience throughout the championship game, with multiple players contributing key hits. Briceyda Martinez went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Alessandra Armstrong hit an RBI triple, and Jazmine Larin Rada went 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Meanwhile, Marana Little League also celebrated a championship Wednesday, winning their 50/70 baseball district title with a dominant 15-0 victory over Continental Ranch. They'll head to Nogales for their state tournament starting July 6.

These young athletes are learning valuable lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and handling pressure that will serve them far beyond the softball diamond.
