Zambia's Solar Power Grows 855% in Five Years

Zambia just proved that renewable energy revolutions can happen fast, scaling its solar power nearly tenfold in five years.

The country's solar capacity skyrocketed from a modest 88 megawatts in 2021 to 841 MW by July 2026, according to Zambia's Ministry of Energy. That's enough clean energy to power hundreds of thousands of homes while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

The growth puts Zambia on track to hit 1,000 MW of solar generation by the end of this year. That target comes directly from a Presidential Directive, showing renewable energy has become a national priority.

Major utility-scale projects are driving much of the expansion. The Copperbelt Energy Corporation built two massive solar plants totaling 196 MW in Kitwe, while the national utility ZESCO launched multiple projects including twin 100 MW plants in Chisamba.

Everyday Zambians are joining the solar movement too. About 30 MW now comes from homes and businesses using the country's net metering program, launched in July 2024.

The program lets people install solar panels, power their own needs, and sell extra electricity back to the grid. It's turning ordinary citizens into clean energy producers.

The Ripple Effect

Zambia's solar surge shows African nations can leapfrog outdated energy systems. While many countries built their grids on coal and gas over decades, Zambia is jumping straight to renewables at record speed.

The transformation reaches beyond electricity bills. Solar farms create local jobs in construction, maintenance, and operations across regions from Kitwe to Mansa to Serenje.

Reliable renewable power also supports economic development in rural areas that previously struggled with electricity access. Small businesses can operate longer hours, students can study after dark, and health clinics can refrigerate medicines.

The country's success could inspire neighboring nations facing similar energy challenges. Zimbabwe, Malawi, and other African countries are watching closely as Zambia proves rapid solar adoption works at national scale.

With just 159 MW needed to reach the 1,000 MW target, Zambia's clean energy future looks bright.
