Australia Backs 1.2 GW Clean Energy for AI Expansion

South Australia just landed one of the country's biggest clean energy deals, and it's powering something unexpected: the future of artificial intelligence.

Firmus Technologies secured a 12-year agreement with Gunvor Group to supply 600 MW of electricity for AI data centers in regional South Australia. The deal will spark the development of 1.2 GW of new renewable generation and 1.5 GWh of battery storage by 2032.

The agreement supports AI Factory campuses planned for Tailem Bend and Stirling North, representing 2.7 GW of total capacity. These facilities will bring large-scale industrial infrastructure and skilled jobs to regional communities with strong renewable resources and existing transmission lines.

At the heart of the deal is the Koolunga Battery Energy Storage System, a 200 MW grid-forming battery near Brinkworth. This massive storage facility will represent more than half of Firmus' initial energy commitment, strengthening the electricity system even before construction begins on the AI campuses.

The agreement includes a smart twist: Firmus will reduce electricity use for up to 220 hours yearly when wholesale prices spike. This demand flexibility frees up power for other users during peak stress periods, easing pressure on both the grid and consumer prices.

Oliver Curtis, Co-CEO of Firmus Technologies, emphasized the regional investment angle. The company chose South Australia specifically because these locations match large-scale AI infrastructure needs with abundant renewable energy resources.

Premier Peter Malinauskas celebrated the deal as proof that South Australia's clean energy leadership attracts future industries. The state is already a renewable energy pioneer, and this agreement adds economic development to environmental progress.

The Ripple Effect

This deal shows how emerging industries like AI can accelerate clean energy adoption rather than strain fossil fuel systems. By requiring new renewable generation and storage as part of their energy supply, Firmus is adding clean capacity to the grid instead of competing for existing resources.

The flexible demand component creates another win. When Firmus reduces consumption during price spikes, it helps stabilize the entire system while demonstrating how large industrial users can support grid reliability.
