That's the reality for 300,000 deaf and hearing-impaired children in Kenya, where most never step foot in a classroom and no standardized sign language even exists to teach complex subjects like math and science.
Norah Kimathi saw this injustice and refused to accept it. At just 22 years old, she founded ZeroBionic and invented robotic hands that let any teacher communicate with deaf students, even if they've never learned sign language themselves.
Each mechanical hand is 3D-printed from recycled plastic waste and costs $350. The device translates spoken words into sign language with 92% accuracy, and it lasts three years without maintenance.
ZeroBionic has already sold 78 units to schools across Kenya. But getting here required solving a problem Kimathi never anticipated.
When her team sat down to program the translation software, they discovered something shocking. No unified dataset of Kenyan or African sign language existed anywhere. Other robotics companies could pull from libraries of standardized signs, but in Africa, Kimathi had to build everything from the ground up.

She enlisted deaf teachers and experienced signers to record thousands of sign movements. The team imported an electrode-lined bodysuit to capture every gesture precisely. "No one else had built this on the continent. We had to start from scratch," Kimathi told AFP from her tiny lab in Nairobi.
The Ripple Effect
Those 78 robotic hands represent something far bigger than sales numbers. They represent hundreds of deaf children finally accessing education for the first time. They represent teachers who can now serve students they couldn't reach before.
Every device multiplies opportunity across an entire community. A single classroom equipped with ZeroBionic technology can serve deaf students year after year, building knowledge that these children can carry into careers, families, and futures that seemed impossible before.
Kimathi isn't stopping with hands. Her next project is Africa One, a robotic upper torso that will dramatically increase vocabulary and accuracy for African sign language. More complex signs require shoulder and chest movement, and Africa One will capture that full range of communication.
"We know we're going to put a smile on someone else's face," Kimathi said, and she's already proven it 78 times over with countless more ahead.
