That's now possible with Gene.01, a humanoid robot unveiled this week by Generative Bionics at AMD Advancing AI 2026. The Italian company built the robot in just six months, equipping it with what they call a "tactile skin" that covers its entire body.
This isn't just about avoiding collisions. Gene.01 can detect touch, temperature, proximity, and force across its whole frame, letting it sense when humans are nearby and respond naturally. The technology makes human-robot collaboration feel less like working with machinery and more like working with an aware partner.
The real breakthrough lies in how Gene.01 learns. Instead of only watching videos of tasks, the robot can feel what's happening as humans guide it through motions. Daniele Pucci, CEO of Generative Bionics, explains that Gene.01 is designed as a scalable platform rather than a one-size-fits-all solution. The company plans to customize the robot for different industries by adapting its AI, exterior design, and attachments like hands and feet for specific jobs.

The first real-world application is already underway. Gene.01 is being adapted for shipbuilding through a partnership with Fincantieri, a global shipyard leader. That version will handle complex welding tasks in challenging shipyard environments.

Generative Bionics is taking an unusual step by open-sourcing Gene.01's robot model. They've made it accessible through common developer channels, meaning AI researchers and robotics developers can start building applications for the platform immediately. This could accelerate innovation across multiple industries, from logistics and manufacturing to healthcare and public safety.
The company is also working with German actuation specialist Synapticon to build what they call a "sovereign physical AI ecosystem" anchored in European manufacturing. This approach prioritizes trusted supply chains, stronger safety compliance, and human-centric design.
Generative Bionics spun out of Italy's prestigious Italian Institute of Technology in 2024 with exclusive licenses to key technologies developed over 20 years of humanoid research. Late last year, they raised $81.2 million to develop products, train AI systems, and build their first production facility.
