Ancient papyrus fragment with Greek text from Homer's Iliad discovered in Egyptian mummy wrappings

Ancient Mummy Reveals Homer's Iliad Hidden Inside Wrappings

🤯 Mind Blown

Archaeologists in Egypt discovered a 1,600-year-old mummy with a fragment of Homer's Iliad tucked beneath its wrappings. It's the first known Greek literary text deliberately incorporated into the mummification process.

Imagine being buried with your favorite story close to your heart for eternity. That's exactly what archaeologists just uncovered in an ancient Egyptian tomb.

Researchers working at Oxyrhynchus, an ancient city about 100 miles south of Cairo, found something remarkable inside a 1,600-year-old tomb. One mummy had a papyrus fragment from Homer's Iliad placed beneath the wrappings on its abdomen during embalming.

"The fact that in this case the text, in Greek, refers to a literary text is truly novel," say archaeologists Maite Mascort and Esther Pons, who lead the excavation. Nobody has ever found a Greek literary text used this way in mummification before.

The passage comes from a famous section of the Iliad called the catalog of ships. It lists the Greek warriors who sailed to Troy, calling on the muses to "name the leaders of the Greek forces."

The discovery happened in late 2025 in Tomb 65, among several other mummies decorated with gold leaf and geometric patterns. Some also had golden or copper tongues, which ancient Egyptians believed would help the deceased speak to the god Osiris in the afterlife.

But the Iliad fragment is unique. While archaeologists have found papyrus texts in other Roman-era mummies, those were typically magical spells or protective rituals, not beloved literature.

"In the Greco-Roman period, texts such as the Iliad circulated across all Egypt," says papyrologist Leah Mascia. People used them in schools and even owned personal copies.

Why This Inspires

This discovery shows us something beautiful about human nature across millennia. Someone loved this epic poem so much they wanted it buried with them, just like we might tuck a favorite book into a time capsule today.

The connection between ancient readers and Homer's stories feels surprisingly close. They weren't just studying these texts as dry historical documents. They cherished them enough to carry them into the next life.

Researchers are still carefully restoring other papyri from the tomb using noninvasive techniques. "We cannot rule out that some other literary text may also appear," Mascort says.

After 1,600 years in the dark, this fragment reminds us that great stories never truly die.
