Ancient Starfish Fossil Shows Turkey Was Once Underwater

Imagine hiking through the mountains and stumbling upon proof that you're walking on an ancient ocean floor. That's exactly what happened to one nature lover in western Turkey, whose starfish fossil discovery is rewriting the region's history.

The fossil was found during a casual walk through the Baklan district of Denizli, in a mountainous area that today sits far from any coastline. The hiker immediately recognized something special and took steps to preserve it.

Experts believe the starfish lived roughly 100 million years ago when this entire region was submerged under water. What are now towering mountains were once small islands poking above the waves.

Ahmet Akbay, founder of the Calkebir Culture Association, called the discovery scientifically valuable evidence of the area's dramatic transformation. The fossil helps piece together how this landscape evolved over millions of years.

The surrounding terrain tells an equally fascinating story. Sand dunes and land formations suggest powerful ocean currents once swept through the area, carving and shaping the earth.

Akbay points to even more clues scattered across the landscape. Karacadag mountain may have once stood much higher before earthquakes and collapses brought it down, while compression forces pushed neighboring Turkmen Yuzi upward.

An old stream bed in the area appears to be the remnant of a massive ancient lake. Smaller lake formations visible today back up this theory of a water-rich past.
