Argentina Army Trades Quince Harvest for Truck Parts

Argentina's Army just proved that sometimes the best solutions are the oldest ones.

Facing tight budget restrictions, the military launched an unusual tender this week. They're offering to trade quince fruit grown on their own estate for 31 spare parts needed to fix a 2010 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck.

The deal works like a reverse auction. Whoever agrees to accept the smallest amount of quince in exchange for delivering all the parts wins the contract. The Army needs everything from brake pads to bushings to a water pump for the vehicle stationed in San Rafael, Mendoza Province.

This isn't the Army's first creative use of their quince harvest. In 2021, they auctioned off 350 tonnes of the fruit. In 2019, they sold 520 tonnes. But those times, they traded for cash instead of goods.

The winning bidder will have 30 days to deliver the parts and 20 days to collect their quince from the military's Cuadro Nacional estate. It's an elegant solution that turns surplus crops into needed supplies without spending scarce budget dollars.

The Bright Side

This story shows how creative thinking can solve resource problems without waste. The Army grows quince on land they already manage. Rather than letting it sit unused or struggling to sell it separately, they're converting it directly into what they need.
