Armenia Votes for Pro-West Party Despite Russian Pressure

In a powerful display of democratic will, Armenia just voted to move closer to the West, even as Russia applied heavy pressure to stop them.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's Civil Contract party won 49.8% of votes in parliamentary elections that international observers called crucial for the nation's future direction. The victory came despite what European election monitors described as "unprecedented" Russian interference, including public threats and trade restrictions.

"Russia exercised unprecedented pressure, using public threats and trade measures, trying to substantially alter the results of the election," said Edita Estrella of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. She called it "blatant interference in the domestic affairs of a sovereign state."

The stakes were high for this country of nearly three million people. Armenia has historically relied on Russia as its largest trading partner and security guarantor, but that relationship has frayed in recent years.

Pashinyan has been shifting Armenia's focus westward since 2023, when Russia failed to help during a conflict with neighboring Azerbaijan. He froze participation in a Russia-led security alliance, signed a strategic partnership with the United States, and started pursuing possible EU membership.

Moscow didn't take these moves lightly. In the weeks before the election, Russia banned several Armenian products and launched misinformation campaigns online. Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a pointed warning in May, comparing Armenia's situation to Ukraine's.

This election shows the power of citizens choosing their own path, even when facing pressure from a much larger neighbor. Armenia's voters decided their future despite real economic risks and political threats.

European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen praised the outcome, telling Pashinyan that "the spirit of the Velvet Revolution you led in 2018 is alive and well." French President Emmanuel Macron said the result would boost "momentum toward closer ties with Europe."

The Prime Minister called it a "historic victory" and expressed hope for better relations with neighbors Turkey and Azerbaijan. "The Armenian people voted for regional prosperity and cooperation," he said.

While Pashinyan fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to call a constitutional referendum demanded by Azerbaijan as part of peace talks, his decisive win gives him a clear mandate to continue diversifying Armenia's international partnerships.
