Astronaut Returns Home After 8 Months, 102M Miles in Space

A Maryland astronaut is back on solid ground after an extraordinary eight-month journey that took him more than 102 million miles from home.

NASA astronaut Chris Williams touched down in Kazakhstan on Sunday alongside two Russian cosmonauts, wrapping up 241 days aboard the International Space Station. The Potomac area resident completed more than 3,800 orbits around our planet during his first mission to space.

Williams didn't just float around up there. He spent his time conducting scientific research that could help cancer patients here on Earth, improving semiconductor manufacturing processes, and testing spacecraft water systems.

The Montgomery Blair High School graduate also ventured outside the space station twice for spacewalks. He worked on the station's robotic arm and helped maintain its solar power system, keeping the orbiting laboratory running smoothly for future crews.

Before becoming an astronaut in 2021, Williams dedicated his career to fighting cancer. He worked as a researcher focused on improving imaging and radiation treatments for patients battling the disease.
