Australia's Snowy 2.0 TBM Completes Historic Breakthrough

A giant tunnel boring machine just punched through the final stretch of rock deep beneath Australia's Snowy Mountains, bringing the nation one step closer to powering millions of homes with clean energy.

The tunnel Eileen carved connects two reservoirs through 27 kilometers of solid rock beneath the Australian Alps. That's longer than 270 football fields, all underground. The boring machine weighs as much as 90 elephants and cuts through some of the hardest rock formations on the continent.
