
Boston Startup Turns Bricks Into Clean Energy Batteries

Heavy industry just got a surprisingly simple solution to one of climate change's toughest problems. Electrified Thermal Solutions has created special firebricks that store cheap renewable electricity as heat, then release it on demand to power factories that make steel, cement, and chemicals.
The innovation, called the Joule Hive Thermal Battery, combines traditional firebricks with advanced versions that conduct electricity. These bricks do triple duty: they heat up, store that heat, and transfer it through channels as hot air whenever factories need it.
The system can handle temperatures up to 1,800 degrees Celsius, hot enough for the most demanding industrial processes. Factories can charge the bricks with off-peak electricity when it's cheapest, especially during midday hours when solar power floods the grid.
"The Joule Hive converts and stores power as heat at greater than 98% efficiency, and the storage medium is essentially a brick," CEO Daniel Stack told PV Magazine. That simplicity keeps costs low compared to other battery technologies.
The economics are already compelling. Stack says the system beats natural gas anywhere it costs more than $34.80 per megawatt hour, and that's without subsidies. In Texas, where the company commissioned its first commercial system this year, the bricks often charge during hours when electricity prices go negative because there's too much solar and wind power.

The 20 megawatt hour system at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio demonstrates how thermal storage can solve two problems at once. It gives renewable energy somewhere to go when the grid doesn't need it, while giving factories affordable clean heat around the clock.
The Ripple Effect
This technology addresses a challenge that's often overlooked in climate conversations. While renewable electricity gets lots of attention, heavy industry still depends almost entirely on fossil fuels for the extreme heat it requires. Electrified Thermal Solutions' approach makes it economically attractive for manufacturers to switch.
The timing couldn't be better. As solar and wind installations multiply, grids increasingly face periods when they generate more clean electricity than anyone can use. Thermal batteries turn that excess into valuable industrial heat instead of wasting it.
For factories with their own solar panels, the system offers even more value. They can install more panels than their grid connection would normally allow, storing the midday surplus as heat they'll use later.
Founded just three years ago in 2022, the company has already raised $24.3 million and deployed its first commercial-scale system. Every charging cycle proves the concept works with real grid conditions, not just in laboratory settings.
The broader impact extends beyond individual factories. As more industrial facilities adopt thermal storage, they'll provide the flexible demand that helps stabilize grids heavy with renewable energy.
