
Germany Tests Wooden Wind Turbine Blades to Cut Waste
A German company is bringing back wooden wind turbine blades that could solve a growing recycling nightmare. With over 41,000 turbines in just five U.S. states, old fiberglass blades are piling up with nowhere to go.
Wind turbines generate 10.5% of America's electricity, but their massive fiberglass blades create a hidden pollution problem that's been stumping engineers for decades.
Now a German company called Voodin Blade Technology is reviving a surprisingly simple solution: wooden wind turbine blades. They just built 63-foot blades from laminated spruce that could be far easier to recycle than today's fiberglass giants.
The idea isn't new. Back in the 1980s, NASA partnered with Michigan boatbuilders Gougeon Brothers to test wood-composite turbine blades. The wooden blades passed 8,000 hours of testing without failing. The steel mounting stud broke first, not the wood.
Gougeon Brothers sold 4,300 wooden blades to General Electric and Westinghouse, some stretching 70 feet long. Then the industry mysteriously switched to fiberglass in the 1990s, and the recycling headaches began.
Today's fiberglass blades last 20 to 30 years but are nearly impossible to recycle. Glass fibers get trapped in thermoset resin, requiring energy-guzzling processes like pyrolysis to separate them. Europe got so desperate they turned old turbine blades into pedestrian bridges.

Voodin's approach uses computer-controlled machines to mill Nordic spruce into curved blade shapes. No molds needed. The automation makes wooden blades easier to scale and customize than the labor-intensive process from the 1980s.
The Bright Side
When wooden blades reach the end of their lifespan, recycling becomes straightforward. They can be ground down to make shelving, pallets, mulch, or even bioenergy. No toxic chemicals. No extreme heat. Just wood returning to useful materials.
The timing matters. Just five U.S. states contain over 41,000 wind turbines. In Germany, wind and solar power recently surpassed fossil fuels as the nation's top electricity source. All those turbines will eventually need new blades.
Voodin's 63-foot blades are currently undergoing testing in Germany. The company plans to scale up production to match the massive sizes modern utility turbines require, potentially preventing mountains of fiberglass waste from piling up in landfills.
