Boston Tests Airport Security 23 Miles from the Airport

Long TSA lines might soon become a thing of the past for travelers flying out of Boston Logan International Airport.

Starting June 1, passengers can now check bags, print boarding passes, and clear security at a remote terminal in Framingham, Massachusetts, about 23 miles from the airport. After screening, they board a secure bus straight to their gate.

The Transportation Security Administration launched the pilot program with the Massachusetts Port Authority, making it the first off-airport security checkpoint in North America. Governor Maura Healey called it a potential game-changer for travelers.

The new system works at the Logan Express terminal in Framingham, a popular park-and-ride location that locals have used for years to avoid airport traffic and parking fees. Passengers go through the same full TSA screening process they would at the airport, according to Peter Howe, Massport's deputy director of roadway management.

Then they hop on a secure bus that takes them directly to their terminal. No additional security screening required at the airport.

The financial benefits sweeten the deal. A bus ticket costs just $9 each way, with free rides for passengers under 18 traveling with ticketed family members. Parking runs $7 per day at the remote terminal compared to $37 to $46 daily at Logan.
