A baby monkey who captured hearts worldwide with his devotion to a stuffed orangutan toy has just taken his biggest step toward belonging.

Punch, a young macaque at Japan's Ichikawa Zoological and Botanical Garden, was recently filmed cuddling with another monkey and riding on its back. For an infant macaque, this piggyback behavior signals acceptance and the start of real friendship.

The tiny primate's journey started with rejection. Born in July 2025, Punch was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth and raised by zookeepers. When staff reintegrated him into the monkey mountain enclosure on January 19, the established troop bullied and ignored him.
