Scientists at the Field Museum of Chicago studied the ancient droppings and found they contained multiple feathers, tiny fish scales, and leg bones from a hesperornithiform, an extinct aquatic bird similar to modern loons. These diving birds couldn't fly but used specialized feet to hunt underwater for fish.
The feathers are the first ever found from hesperornithiforms, and they reveal something fascinating. While some feathers looked modern and waterproof, the birds also had smaller, fuzzy, primitive body feathers more similar to dinosaurs.

Professor Jingmai O'Connor, the study's lead author, believes this difference was critical to survival. Modern birds, called Neornithes, had more advanced feathers that kept them warm during the brutal impact winter that followed the asteroid strike.
"The hesperornithiforms retain primitive feather types that may not have been as efficient for insulation as modern plumaceous feathers," O'Connor explained. That could be why they went extinct while Neornithes survived to become ancestors of every bird alive today.
