After the asteroid struck, winters became brutally cold. Birds that could hold in more body heat had a better chance of making it through, which may explain why the ancestors of today's 10,000 bird species survived while their cousins perished.

This discovery happened because DeMar noticed something others might have walked past for 150 years. The fossilized poop only revealed its secret because it had split open in just the right way, exposing that single feather on the surface.

Lead researcher Jingmai O'Connor, who usually studies complete skeletons, felt like a detective piecing together tiny clues from leftover scraps. Now she's encouraging other scientists to look more carefully at fossilized droppings, which might hold answers to questions we haven't even thought to ask yet.
