Electric Car Owners Triple at Malaysia's Sepang Track Day

The quiet hum of electric motors replaced roaring engines at Malaysia's famous Sepang International Circuit as more than 100 EV owners put their cars through their paces on a professional racing track.

The June 7th event, organized by tech media outlet SoyaCincau and EV brand Dongfeng, shattered expectations with a turnout that more than tripled last year's 30 participants. By 5pm, eager drivers from Malaysia and Singapore were still queuing to experience the legendary circuit.

"We want to prove that EVs don't have any limitations," said Amin Ashaari, SoyaCincau's CEO and co-founder. The event focused less on racing and more on helping owners discover what their electric vehicles could really do.

Participants enjoyed four one-hour track sessions, testing everything from Teslas and BMWs to Protons and Porsches. Dongfeng showcased three models, while professional drivers offered high-speed track taxi rides to show what EVs can achieve in expert hands.

First-time track driver Kim Chan, 39, couldn't hide her excitement after completing her laps. "It was fun and I enjoyed it," she said, noting how strange it felt to see the usually roaring circuit so peaceful.

The Ripple Effect

The event signals growing confidence in Malaysia's EV future, even though electric vehicles currently make up less than 30 percent of car sales. Organizers are using track days to educate the public about EV capabilities, pricing, and charging solutions.

The community aspect resonated strongly with participants. "The EV community is still small in Malaysia, and we need such events to encourage more people to learn about EVs," said returning driver Ee Sheeden, who improved his Tesla Model 3's lap time from 2:34 to 2:27.

Volt Auto's CEO Soh Ming called it a valuable testing ground for gathering performance data and building the EV community. His company already sponsors sports events in Singapore and wants to expand track events across the region.

The enthusiastic response shows electric vehicle owners are hungry for experiences that showcase their cars' performance while connecting with fellow enthusiasts in a supportive, educational environment.
