Electric Scooters Now Warn Riders About Potholes Ahead

Ather Energy announced this week that its electric scooters can now warn riders about potholes, broken road patches, uneven surfaces, and speed breakers ahead while they navigate. The feature works by tapping into road intelligence collected from Ather's entire fleet of connected scooters rolling across Indian roads every day.

The company rolled out "Pothole+ Alerts" to customers with Gen 2 and newer models, including the Ather 450 Apex, 450X, and Rizta Z scooters. When riders use navigation, alerts pop up on their dashboard and play through their scooter speakers, Ather Halo smart helmets, or any connected Bluetooth headset.

CEO and co-founder Tarun Mehta shared that the feature took nearly nine years to develop. The biggest challenge wasn't the concept itself but gathering enough data to make it accurate and useful.

Every Ather scooter comes equipped with onboard computers and connectivity that constantly collect road condition data. As the company's fleet grew, so did its ability to map road hazards across entire cities with precision.

The Ripple Effect

This innovation points to something bigger than smoother rides. When vehicles share data about road conditions, entire communities benefit from safer streets and better infrastructure awareness.

Local governments could use this crowdsourced information to identify and fix problem areas faster. Delivery riders, daily commuters, and first-time visitors to unfamiliar neighborhoods all gain an extra layer of safety without lifting a finger.
