A Finnish steel company just opened a plant that turns wood waste into clean fuel, slashing emissions equivalent to taking 18,000 cars off the road. The breakthrough could transform how the world makes stainless steel.
Outokumpu's new biocoke plant in Tornio, Finland just proved that heavy industry can clean up without shutting down.
The stainless steel producer invested €30 million in a facility that converts biochar into biocoke, a plant-based alternative to fossil coke used in making ferrochrome. When running at full capacity, the plant will cut 82,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.
That's the same climate impact as removing 18,000 cars from the road every year. And production has already started, with biocoke now fueling Outokumpu's own operations and heading to external customers.
Steel production has long been one of the hardest industries to decarbonize. Unlike electric cars or solar panels, making steel requires intense heat traditionally supplied by fossil fuels. Outokumpu is showing there's another way.

The company's ferrochrome already has a carbon footprint 67 percent lower than the industry average. This new biocoke facility pushes that advantage even further as Outokumpu works toward its ambitious 2030 goal: reducing emissions across its entire value chain by 42 percent compared to 2016 levels.

The real excitement isn't just about one plant in northern Finland. It's about proving a concept that could spread across the global steel industry.
Biocoke production demonstrates that heavy manufacturing can swap fossil fuels for renewable alternatives at commercial scale. Other steel producers worldwide are watching closely, and Outokumpu is already selling its biocoke to external customers who want to clean up their own operations.
"Biocoke production has already started in Tornio, and biocoke has been produced both for our own use and for external customers," said Juha Erkkilä, head of Outokumpu EvoCarbon. The integrated production site in Tornio now serves as a working model for what sustainable steelmaking can look like.
Every ton of biocoke that replaces fossil coke is a step toward steel that doesn't cost the Earth.
