The Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 rocketed down a Charlotte drag strip in just 6.87 seconds at 221 mph during an NHRA event, claiming the world record for the fastest electric vehicle quarter mile. The achievement shatters Ford's own previous record of 7.62 seconds, set only last September, by three-quarters of a second.

The secret to this monster's speed? A complete redesign that proves less can be more.

Ford's engineers swapped out four electric motors for just two, cutting weight in half while cranking up total power to 2,200 horsepower. That's 600 more horses than before, all delivered with 98 percent efficiency through a cutting-edge 900-volt system.

The car packs some clever racing tricks usually reserved for gas-powered vehicles. A specially designed clutch dumps all that power to the pavement instantly, while a multi-speed transmission keeps the motors in their sweet spot throughout the entire run. Ford says that transmission alone shaves up to a full second off the quarter mile time.

Safety features are equally impressive. The car uses a pyrotechnic circuit breaker that can instantly cut the high-voltage connection using a small explosive charge, meeting strict NHRA safety requirements. The 32 kWh battery recharges in just 20 minutes, perfect for the NHRA's 45-minute turnaround between runs.
