Georgia Student Wins County STAR Award, Eyes State Title

When Helen Austin scored the highest SAT in her school while ranking in the top 10 percent of her class, she knew exactly who deserved credit alongside her.

The St. Mary's Academy senior accepted the Fayette County STAR Student Award at the Kiwanis Club's annual banquet on February 10. The ceremony at Studio Café in Fayetteville brought together six local high schools to celebrate academic excellence through Georgia's Student Teacher Achievement Recognition program.

Austin chose advanced placement language teacher Katy McCall as her STAR Teacher. The honor recognizes educators who've made significant impacts on students' academic journeys, and for Austin, McCall was the clear choice.

The STAR program sets high bars for recognition. Students must achieve their school's highest SAT score and maintain grades that place them in the top 10 percent of their graduating class. It's a rare combination of standardized test excellence and consistent academic performance over four years.

Austin now advances to compete for Georgia's PAGE STAR Student title. The regional competition will pit her against other county winners across the state, each representing their school's best and brightest.
