
German Wind Giant Launches First Wind-Plus-Battery Projects
A pioneering wind energy company just signed contracts for Germany's first hybrid wind-storage farms, solving one of renewable energy's biggest challenges. The breakthrough could make clean power more reliable and affordable across Europe.
Wind turbines have always had one weakness: they only generate power when the wind blows. Now German wind energy leader ENERCON just signed contracts for two groundbreaking projects that pair wind farms with massive battery systems, storing excess energy for when skies are calm.
The company, which has installed more than 33,000 wind turbines across 50 countries since 1984, partnered with Planungsbüro Düser GmbH to develop Germany's first Wind+Storage projects. These hybrid facilities combine wind turbines, battery storage, and smart technology that decides when to generate, store, or release electricity to the grid.
The timing couldn't be better for Germany, which produces more wind energy than any other European nation. When renewable energy floods the grid during windy days, electricity prices can plummet, hurting wind farm profits and making clean energy projects harder to finance.
The first project in Möhnesee-Westrich will pair two wind turbines with a battery system that stores 10 megawatt-hours of energy. That's enough to power about 1,000 homes for an hour during peak demand.

The second site in Soest-Meiningsen goes even further, combining wind and solar generation with a 30 megawatt-hour battery in a single location. One turbine is already spinning as of 2026, with a second planned for 2028.
The Ripple Effect
These projects show how energy storage transforms renewable power from intermittent to dependable. Wind farms can now capture energy during breezy afternoons and release it during dinner time when families turn on lights and appliances.
"The combination of wind energy converters, battery storage systems and intelligent control shows where the energy transition is heading," said ENERCON CEO Udo Bauer. "Customers today need solutions that make renewable energy more flexible to use."
Germany already gets a third of its electricity from wind during peak months, thanks to over 70 gigawatts of installed capacity. As more hybrid projects come online, that percentage will climb while keeping the grid stable and electricity affordable.
The success of these pilot projects could inspire similar developments across Europe and beyond, proving that renewable energy doesn't have to mean sacrificing reliability. Clean power just got more practical.
