Ghana MP Tells Law Students: Attitude Beats Qualifications

Your attitude might be more valuable than your law degree, according to one of Ghana's experienced political leaders.

Samuel Abu Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Damongo and Ranking Member on Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, delivered a powerful message to law students at the University of Ghana's 2026 Leadership and Law Series. Speaking via video to the April 18 gathering, he urged young professionals to focus on qualities that textbooks can't teach.

"You may have all the qualifications on paper, but your attitude is going to determine how far you go," Jinapor told the students at ISSER Conference Centre. He emphasized that humility, discipline, and respect open doors that certificates alone cannot.

The MP placed equally strong emphasis on finding mentors. He reminded the young professionals that no one succeeds alone, and the guidance of experienced leaders can shape entire careers. "Along your journey, you will need guidance, support, and sometimes correction," he explained.

Jinapor spoke from personal experience. He credited former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with mentoring him early in his career, providing opportunities that shaped his understanding of public service and governance. Those relationships, he noted, proved as valuable as any formal education.

Drawing on wisdom from Winston Churchill, Jinapor encouraged students to focus on immediate steps rather than becoming overwhelmed by distant goals. Success comes gradually through persistence and determination, he assured them.
