Electric vehicle driver using smartphone app to locate and navigate to charging station

GM Adds 5,000 Fast Chargers to Driver Apps Nationwide

😊 Feel Good

General Motors just made road trips easier for 250,000 electric vehicle drivers by integrating Electrify America's charging network directly into their vehicle apps. Now Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac owners can find, navigate to, and pay for charging without juggling multiple apps.

Electric vehicle owners just got a major convenience upgrade that makes long-distance travel feel less like a scavenger hunt and more like a normal road trip.

General Motors announced this week that it's embedding Electrify America's entire charging network into its brand apps for Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles. That means drivers can now see real-time availability at over 5,000 DC fast chargers across the country, all without leaving their car's navigation system.

The integration goes beyond just showing dots on a map. Drivers can plan routes with charging stops built in, watch their charging progress in real time, and pay for everything through one app. No more downloading separate apps, creating new accounts, or fumbling with payment systems at unfamiliar stations.

"We're collaborating across the industry to deliver not just more chargers, but better public charging experiences," said Wade Sheffer, VP of GM Energy. The move follows similar integrations by Rivian, which recently added Electrify America stations to its mobile app with power levels and user ratings.

GM drivers now have access to more than 250,000 public charging stations across the US and Canada. That includes over 35,000 Tesla Superchargers, which GM opened to its vehicles in late 2024 through a special adapter.

The Ripple Effect

This kind of collaboration represents a quiet revolution in how the auto industry thinks about competition. Just a few years ago, each carmaker wanted its own proprietary charging network. Now they're realizing that drivers win when companies work together.

The shift toward shared standards is gaining momentum too. Multiple automakers are replacing their old charging ports with Tesla's North American Charging Standard, making it easier for everyone to charge anywhere. Tesla nearly doubled its Supercharger count in the past year alone, growing from about 17,800 to over 35,000 stations.

For the average driver considering an electric vehicle, range anxiety has long been the biggest barrier. Announcements like this chip away at that fear by making charging as predictable as finding a gas station. When you can see exactly where chargers are, whether they're working, and how long you'll wait, the mental math of going electric gets a lot simpler.

GM sold nearly 170,000 electric vehicles last year, making it the second largest EV seller in America after Tesla. While that's just 6% of the company's total sales, it represents a 48% jump from the previous year. As charging gets easier and more reliable, those numbers are likely to keep climbing.

The road to electric is getting smoother, one app update at a time.
