Hiroshima Survivor Plants 55 Peace Trees Across Oregon

Seeds from trees that withstood the atomic bomb are now growing as 55 living monuments to peace across Oregon, thanks to a Hiroshima survivor who transformed her childhood trauma into a mission of reconciliation.

Hideko Tamura Snider was just 10 years old on August 6, 1945, when the atomic bomb killed an estimated 140,000 people in her hometown of Hiroshima. She survived unspeakable loss that day, but rather than let grief consume her, she spent decades working toward peace.

Her latest effort brought seeds from Hiroshima's survivor trees to communities throughout Oregon. The documentary "Seeds of Peace" follows this years-long project, showing how these botanical descendants now stand in carefully chosen locations tied to World War II memory, Japanese American incarceration, veterans' experiences, and reconciliation.

The film, directed by historian David-Paul B. Hedberg, captures Snider's personal story alongside the planting of each tree. She recently updated her 1998 memoir "One Sunny Day" to include this peace work, ensuring her message reaches new generations.

Snider could have chosen anger or silence after experiencing one of history's most devastating events. Instead, she chose seeds. These aren't just trees. They're living proof that life persists even after unimaginable destruction, and that former enemies can cultivate peace together.
