Hungarian Zoo Pampers Endangered African Tortoises

Staff at Nyíregyháza Zoo in eastern Hungary spent Wednesday pampering their resident spurred tortoises with careful washing, grooming, and complete veterinary examinations. The gentle wellness session allowed keepers to check each tortoise for injuries and monitor their overall health before feeding time.

These aren't your backyard garden tortoises. Spurred tortoises (Centrochelys sulcata) are massive creatures native to Africa's Sahel region, stretching from Senegal to Ethiopia. They're currently classified as Vulnerable on the conservation watchlist.

The shell is richly innervated, meaning these animals can feel touch, pressure, and even pain through it.
