India's Akshaya Patra Serves 5 Billionth School Meal

The Akshaya Patra Foundation just served its five billionth meal to schoolchildren across India, marking 25 years of making sure no child goes hungry in the classroom. What started as a simple idea has grown into the world's largest NGO-run school lunch program, now feeding 2.35 million kids every single day.

President Droupadi Murmu presided over the celebration at Rashtrapati Bhavan, calling the milestone "remarkable" and essential to India's vision of becoming a fully developed nation by 2047. She emphasized that well-fed children aren't just healthier—they're more likely to show up, stay in school, and succeed academically.

The foundation operates across 16 states and three Union Territories as the largest partner in PM-POSHAN, the government's school nutrition program. What used to be called the Mid-Day Meal Scheme has proven to be one of the most effective tools for getting children through school doors and keeping them there.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan described the program as a "Jan Andolan," a people's movement built on collective action. "Unless our children and youth are well-nourished, India cannot fully realise its potential," he said at the event.

President Murmu framed the work as everyone's responsibility, not just the government's. "A safe and bright future for our children is not solely the responsibility of the government, but a shared responsibility of us all," she told attendees.

The Ripple Effect

The numbers tell a powerful story about what happens when basic needs get met. Schools participating in the program have seen enrollment climb, attendance rates improve, and academic performance rise as students arrive ready to learn instead of distracted by empty stomachs.

The foundation's growth from its first meal 25 years ago to five billion shows what's possible when organizations and governments work together. Pradhan called it "a shining example of how government, society, and institutions can work together to address some of the nation's most complex challenges."

Every meal represents more than just nutrition—it's an investment in breaking cycles of poverty through education. When parents know their children will eat at school, the barrier to sending them instead of keeping them home to work drops significantly.

Five billion meals later, millions of children are getting the chance to focus on their futures instead of their hunger.
