India's Solar Boom Powers Record 256GW Demand in Heatwave

When temperatures soared across India on Saturday afternoon, the nation's power grid faced its biggest test ever. At 3:38 PM, demand hit a record-breaking 256 gigawatts, and the country met it comfortably without rolling blackouts or emergency measures.

The secret weapon? Solar power stepped up in a big way. At the peak moment, solar panels across the country generated 57 gigawatts of electricity, providing 22% of the total power needed.

Earlier in the day around 12:30 PM, solar reached an even more impressive milestone. Generation from solar plants and rooftop systems climbed to 81 gigawatts, accounting for one-third of India's total electricity generation at that moment.

Just two days earlier, India had set what was then a record when the grid supplied 252 gigawatts on Friday. The back-to-back records reflect both the intensity of the current heatwave and the country's growing appetite for electricity as temperatures climb.

The power ministry expects demand to reach 271 gigawatts later this year. While coal-fired plants still provide the foundation of India's electricity supply, the contribution from non-fossil sources including solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear has grown significantly.

Santosh Sarangi, secretary in the ministry of new and renewable energy, emphasized solar's expanding role. "With higher installation of battery energy storage systems, it will also be able to meet the evening peak demand in future," he said.
