Industrial Giant Linde Triples Renewable Energy in 4 Years

A company that uses more electricity than Google just proved that going green at massive scale isn't just possible—it's happening right now.

Linde, an industrial gas giant, signed six new deals to power its operations with wind and solar energy across Spain, Greece, South Africa, and India. These agreements will add 0.63 terawatt hours of renewable electricity annually, enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes.

The new deals push Linde's total renewable energy purchasing to 7.6 TWh in 2025. That's nearly triple what the company used in 2021, when it relied on just 2.8 TWh of clean power.

Half of Linde's global electricity now comes from low-carbon sources. For context, this company uses more power than tech behemoth Google, so every percentage point toward renewables represents enormous real-world impact.

The scale matters because Linde's business is incredibly energy-intensive. The company operates air separation units that cool atmospheric air into liquid, then separate it into oxygen, nitrogen, and other industrial gases through a process that demands massive amounts of electricity. These units alone account for roughly 2% of all carbon dioxide emissions in both China and the United States.

Linde isn't just chasing feel-good metrics. The company aims to cut absolute emissions by 35% by 2035, and renewable energy is central to that goal.

The Ripple Effect

When industrial giants shift to clean energy, they create momentum that extends far beyond their own operations. Linde's customers are demanding lower-carbon products, and governments worldwide are tightening emissions requirements. By securing renewable power at this scale, Linde helps its customers reduce their own carbon footprints too.

The company's CEO emphasized that being one of the world's largest industrial electricity consumers gives Linde unique leverage to accelerate renewable energy adoption. Rather than buying renewable energy credits on paper, the company is directly contracting new wind and solar projects that wouldn't exist otherwise.

Other industrial gas companies are racing to follow suit. Air Liquide and Air Products, Linde's competitors, use electricity comparable to Shell and Microsoft. The entire sector is waking up to the reality that clean energy isn't optional anymore—it's strategic survival.

Linde has already reduced absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 10% compared to its 2021 baseline. The progress shows that even the most energy-hungry industries can bend their emissions curves downward while continuing to grow.
