IndyCar Champ Alex Palou Makes Racing History at Road America

Alex Palou is rewriting the IndyCar record books one pole position at a time.

The reigning four-time IndyCar Series champion secured pole position at Wisconsin's Road America on Saturday, marking his fifth consecutive qualifying win. No driver has achieved this streak within a single season since Danny Sullivan pulled it off in 1988.

Palou's qualifying lap of 1 minute, 43.66 seconds at the challenging 4-mile natural terrain course was enough to edge out Team Penske's David Malukas by nearly three-tenths of a second. The performance caps off an already stellar 2026 season that has seen Palou earn six pole positions total.

"It's incredible," Palou said after the session. "This team, man, and everybody at Honda just giving me the best car, all the power we needed."

The Spanish driver joins elite company with his achievement. Two-time champion Alex Zanardi previously earned five straight poles spanning the 1996 and 1997 seasons, but Palou is the first to accomplish the feat entirely within one year since Sullivan's historic run 36 years ago.

The Chip Ganassi Racing team has found a winning formula this season. While Palou admitted they "suffered quite a lot" in the earlier Q2 round, the final session showed the team's true speed with a lap that couldn't be beaten.
