Indian women reviewing government documents together, symbolizing the Gruha Lakshmi benefit scheme in Karnataka

Karnataka Fixes Benefits for 20,000 Women, Helps 32,000 More

When a software glitch blocked 52,000 women from receiving government support payments in Karnataka, officials jumped into action. Now 20,000 cases are solved, and the rest are being fast-tracked.

More than 20,000 women in Karnataka are now receiving the financial support they deserve after officials resolved a technical error that mistakenly flagged them as ineligible.

The Gruha Lakshmi scheme provides monthly benefits to 12.6 million women across Karnataka to support their households. But around 52,000 women saw their payments suddenly stop when government software incorrectly matched their names with tax records, even though most weren't actually earning enough to pay taxes.

Minister for Women and Child Development Laxmi Hebbalkar explained the problem to state legislators on February 2. Many women had engaged in small business activities or minor financial transactions that caused their names to appear in tax databases, triggering automatic payment blocks in the system.

The government didn't ignore the problem. Officials immediately began reviewing cases individually and have already cleared 20,000 women to resume receiving benefits. The remaining 32,000 cases are now being processed with urgency.

Hebbalkar made clear this wasn't a policy failure but a technical mismatch between databases. The scheme's software automatically cross-checks beneficiary information against tax records to ensure payments go to families who truly need them. When small-scale vendors and entrepreneurs appeared in those records despite modest incomes, the system flagged them incorrectly.

The government has now escalated the issue directly to the Income Tax Department and GST Council. Working together, they're updating records to distinguish between high earners who shouldn't receive benefits and modest-income women who were caught in the digital crossfire.

The Bright Side

This story shows government technology working exactly as it should when problems arise. Rather than leaving thousands of women without support, officials acknowledged the glitch, fixed thousands of cases quickly, and brought in other agencies to prevent future errors.

The Gruha Lakshmi scheme continues serving its core mission of supporting over 12 million women. One software hiccup affected less than half of one percent of beneficiaries, and now even that small fraction is being made whole.

Every eligible woman will get the support she's entitled to.
