Louisiana Alligators: From 100K to 3 Million in 50 Years

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries received national recognition in Washington D.C. this week for saving the American alligator from disappearing forever. In 1972, only about 100,000 alligators remained in the state. Today, more than 3 million thrive in Louisiana's wetlands.

Governor Jeff Landry declared the recognition day as Louisiana's Great American Alligator Day. The U.S. Department of Interior chose the alligator program for its "Scales of Success" celebration during America's 250th anniversary festivities.

LDWF Secretary Tyler Bosworth told the gathered crowd that Louisiana's approach is now used worldwide. Countries managing their own crocodilian species look to Louisiana as the gold standard for sustainable wildlife programs.

The program doesn't just help alligators. It pumps roughly $250 million into Louisiana's economy every year through wild harvests, farm operations, and egg collection. Landowners, trappers, and farmers all benefit financially while the alligator population stays healthy and growing.

The success required decades of commitment from wildlife professionals, both past and present. Thousands of private landowners opened their properties to conservation work, making the recovery possible at scale.
