The discovery happened near Cheyava Falls, a rock spotted in 2025 with dark-rimmed spots that look remarkably like marks microbes leave in Earth rocks. Combined with this new carbon find, the evidence is stacking up.

The only way to know for sure if life made these molecules is to bring a sample back to Earth for detailed lab analysis. NASA had planned a mission to retrieve rock samples in the 2030s, but that program was recently scrapped. China is planning its own sample return mission, but not until 2028 at the earliest.
