Martha's Vineyard Educator's $180K Scholarship Legacy

When Dr. James H. Weiss passed away in August after battling leukemia, he left Martha's Vineyard students an extraordinary gift: a $180,000 scholarship fund to help them afford college.

Weiss served as superintendent of Island schools for ten years, shaping the lives of countless students. His nephew Alan Miller says Weiss especially wanted to help kids who dream of becoming teachers themselves.

The Dr. James H. Weiss Scholarship Fund will award its first $10,000 in scholarships this year through the Martha's Vineyard Community Foundation. Already, 140 students have applied for the opportunity, with winners to be announced in May 2026.

The fund is open to Island students pursuing two-year, four-year bachelor's, or graduate programs. While all majors qualify, priority goes to those entering the education field, following in Weiss's footsteps.

The Ripple Effect

This scholarship does more than ease financial burdens. It creates a cycle of inspiration: students who receive help today may become the teachers who shape Martha's Vineyard's future tomorrow.

Miller hopes the community will rally around his uncle's vision. He's working to grow the fund to $250,000, which would create a permanent endowment supporting Island students for generations.

The foundation welcomes additional donations to honor Weiss's memory. Every dollar added means more local students can pursue their educational dreams without the weight of overwhelming debt.

For a man who spent his career opening doors for young people, this final act of generosity feels perfectly fitting.
