Michigan Group Offers $1,000 Scholarships for LGBTQ+ Allies

A Michigan advocacy group is opening doors for students who stand up for their LGBTQ+ peers, offering scholarships that recognize courage and kindness in action.

PFLAG Manistee announced it will award two or more scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 to graduating seniors in Manistee County this spring. Applications are open until April 3, with winners announced in May.

The scholarship program launched in 2024 to honor John Mencarelli, a beloved Manistee teacher and community advocate who dedicated years to creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families. In its first year, four students from Manistee, Brethren, and ASM Tech Early College High Schools received awards.

This year's scholarships honor Linda Karle-Nelson and Tom Nelson, the founding members of PFLAG Manistee who served on the board for over 14 years. Their commitment helped transform their corner of Michigan into a place where more young people feel seen and supported.

The scholarships are available to any graduating senior who has demonstrated support for LGBTQ+ students and families. That might mean starting a Gay-Straight Alliance, standing up to bullying, or simply being a reliable friend when it mattered most.
