Morocco Completes 2 Flood Protection Projects in Boulemane

Communities in Morocco's Boulemane Province can breathe easier after authorities completed two major flood protection projects designed to keep homes and families safe from rising waters.

The interior minister announced that two critical infrastructure projects are now finished. One protects Douar Ait Ayat village, while the other safeguards the center of Ait Bazza commune, bringing peace of mind to residents who've lived with flood risk.

Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit detailed the progress in a parliamentary response, crediting provincial authorities for their "exceptional efforts" to overcome obstacles and coordinate with multiple agencies. The Sebou Basin Agency oversaw protection works in Douar Ait Ayat, while the Moulouya Basin Agency managed the Ait Bazza project.

The projects recognize something vital: protecting people and infrastructure from climate risks can't wait. Morocco has experienced damaging floods in recent years, and authorities are taking those hard lessons to heart as they plan future protections.

After hitting roadblocks with a previous partnership agreement, officials crafted a new approach that's more realistic and specialized. The revised plan assigns clear responsibilities to get remaining projects moving faster.

Under the updated framework, the Ministry of Equipment and Water will directly build protections for 10 villages, investing about $4 million. Meanwhile, the Sebou and Moulouya basin agencies will manage other projects using their technical expertise in water infrastructure.
