Anand Mahindra posted his surprise discovery of Gilbert Hill on social media, noting how we chase faraway bucket list destinations while ignoring extraordinary sites next door. His simple question, "How do we make this a more visited destination?" has reignited conversation about protecting Mumbai's natural wonders.

Rising 200 feet above suburban Andheri, Gilbert Hill stands as a sheer black basalt column formed during massive volcanic eruptions in the Mesozoic Era. The rock solidified when lava surged vertically through cracks in Earth's crust, creating what geologists call a laccolith.

Only two similar formations exist worldwide: Devils Tower in Wyoming and Devils Postpile in California. A fourth column once stood nearby in Jogeshwari, but quarrying destroyed it decades ago, making Gilbert Hill the last survivor of this ancient volcanic episode.

Despite government protection since 1952 as a National Park and Grade II heritage status granted in 2007, the site remains squeezed between dense slums and residential buildings. In 2015, a builder even attempted damaging the rock with water jets, highlighting its ongoing vulnerability.

What has quietly protected it is faith. Two Hindu temples perch atop the column, reached by steep stairs carved into the ancient rock, drawing daily worshippers who may not realize they're climbing a geological marvel.

The Bright Side

The hill sits barely 5 kilometers from Mumbai's international airport and connects easily to the city's rail network. Its obscurity isn't due to remoteness but simple awareness.

Mahindra's post has already sparked curiosity among thousands who've driven past Andheri for years without knowing a 66-million-year-old volcano stood amid the chaos. Geologists have long advocated for better protection and public education about the site.
