The timing couldn't be better. Data centers and extreme temperatures have been straining New Mexico's power grid, pushing household energy costs higher. Haaland's proposal flips the script by requiring large energy users to build their own infrastructure instead of passing those expenses onto everyday residents.

New Mexico has natural advantages that make this vision realistic. The state enjoys roughly 300 days of sunshine annually, along with strong wind potential and geothermal energy opportunities. These resources could power the state's growing electricity needs without relying on costly fossil fuels.

The plan creates new pathways for workers transitioning from traditional energy jobs. Partnerships between clean energy companies, universities, and labor unions will help fossil fuel industry workers shift into renewable careers with stable paychecks. During her time leading the Interior Department, she approved the SunZia Transmission and Wind Project, now the largest renewable energy project in the Western Hemisphere.
