Nigeria Gets New Gas Research Center at Delta State U

A world-class research facility dedicated to gas development is coming to Delta State University in Nigeria, promising to transform how the country trains energy experts and develops homegrown solutions.

The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board and Seplat Energy met with university leaders Monday to finalize plans for the Centre of Excellence in Gas Development. The facility will focus on advanced research and technology development in Nigeria's rapidly growing gas sector.

This marks the seventh such research center across Nigeria, part of a nationwide strategy to build local expertise in oil and gas. The plan emerged from a comprehensive study showing Nigeria needed stronger connections between its energy industry and local talent.

Seplat Energy chose Delta State University because it sits near the company's major gas operations, including a massive plant processing 300 million standard cubic feet of gas daily. That proximity means students and researchers can work directly with real-world projects.

"There is nothing as good as looking at the Triple Helix Model," said Simeon Ogari, Seplat's Nigerian Content Manager, describing how government, universities, and private companies work best when collaborating closely. The center will embody that partnership, with funding from industry and expertise from academia.

Delta State University brings serious credentials to the project. Times Higher Education recently rated it the best state-owned university in Nigeria, and Vice Chancellor Samuel Asagba highlighted the school's "high-flyers" in science and engineering who will lead research efforts.

The center addresses a critical gap identified in the PricewaterhouseCoopers study: Nigeria's energy sector operates too separately from other parts of the economy. By building research capacity at universities, the country can develop local solutions instead of relying entirely on foreign expertise.

Quality control teams from the development board will oversee construction from start to finish, ensuring the facility meets international standards. The board has assembled technical experts and reinforced its management team specifically for this project.

This research center means more than just new buildings and equipment. It creates a pipeline for Nigerian students to enter high-tech energy careers without leaving the country. The advanced training and research opportunities will help retain talented scientists and engineers who might otherwise seek opportunities abroad.
