Nigeria Plans New Train Station to Transform Umuahia

A major transportation upgrade is coming to Umuahia, Nigeria, as state officials finalize plans with the Nigerian Railway Corporation to build a brand new train station in the capital city.

The station will sit next to the recently completed Umuahia Central Bus Terminal, creating a connected transportation hub for the region. Beyond just trains, the facility will feature an integrated urban rail corridor with shops and retail spaces designed to spark business growth.

Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu shared the news Monday after a State Executive Council meeting. He explained that new access roads will also connect the station to surrounding neighborhoods, making it easier for residents across the area to reach public transit.

The train station is just one piece of Umuahia's transportation transformation. The city has already finished its Central Bus Terminal and is ready to launch a Green Bus Service with electric charging stations, modern ticketing systems, and shelters throughout the city.

Officials have also wrapped up other development projects ready for opening, including new roads and a daily market through the Greater Aba Development Authority. A Federal Housing Authority estate will break ground Tuesday on Umuahia–Uzuakoli Road to expand affordable housing options.
