Nigeria has hired 37,000 new health workers and trained 70,000 more since 2023, tackling staff shortages that have long plagued the country's healthcare system.

The federal government announced the recruitment drive as part of sweeping healthcare reforms aimed at improving service delivery across the nation. Assistant Director Ado Bako confirmed the numbers in a statement from the health ministry this week.

The hiring surge comes alongside a new National Policy on Health Workforce Migration designed to keep skilled professionals from leaving Nigeria. The policy focuses on better workforce planning, stronger retention strategies, and ethical recruitment practices.

The government is backing these efforts with serious funding. Officials approved 32.9 billion naira to support over 8,300 primary health centers, with plans to expand to 13,000 facilities nationwide. These centers have already recorded 80 million patient visits.

More than 21 million vulnerable Nigerians have accessed healthcare through the Vulnerable Groups Health Insurance Fund. The program ensures that the country's poorest citizens can see doctors and get treatment without devastating costs.

The Ripple Effect

The healthcare transformation is creating waves beyond just new hires. Nigeria is investing in local pharmaceutical manufacturing to reduce dependence on imported medicines and make essential drugs more affordable for everyday Nigerians.

Digital health systems are getting upgrades too. Disease surveillance and outbreak preparedness are strengthening through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control gateway, helping the country respond faster when health emergencies strike.

The government reports hitting 84 percent of key performance targets under the Presidential Health Sector Renewal Compact as of this year's review. While officials acknowledge significant challenges remain, they're focusing on sustained action rather than quick fixes.

The ministry emphasized transparency about ongoing gaps. "Lasting reforms are measured not by rhetoric, but by sustained action, transparent implementation and measurable results," Bako said in the statement.

These reforms represent a clear commitment to building a stronger, more resilient health system that serves all Nigerians, no matter their income or location.
