Nigeria Recycling Hub Turns Waste Into Jobs in Masaka

Communities in Masaka, Nasarawa State, now have a new path to turn trash into income thanks to a recycling hub that just opened its doors in Northern Nigeria.

The Sahara Go Recycling Hub launched in June 2026 through a partnership between Sahara Group Foundation and the Nasarawa State Waste Management Authority. It's the first structured recycling access point for Northern Nigerian communities, bringing waste solutions that were previously unavailable in the region.

The hub works by collecting recyclable materials from households and paying residents for items that would otherwise end up in landfills. Local people can drop off plastics, paper, and other recyclables, earning money while keeping their neighborhoods cleaner.

"Masaka represents an important next step in expanding access to sustainable waste management across Nigeria," said Chidilim Menakaya, Director of Sahara Group Foundation. "We are showing how collaboration can unlock cleaner communities, stronger livelihoods, and shared prosperity."

The timing couldn't be better for Masaka residents. Mr. Ishaku Ibrahim, Director of Waste Management for the state authority, explained that the hub creates pathways for people to participate in environmental solutions while earning from materials they used to throw away.

The Ripple Effect

The broader Sahara Go Recycling program has already recycled over 1,000 tonnes of materials since launching. More importantly, it has touched over 2,000 livelihoods across collection, sorting, logistics, and small business operations.

The model creates jobs at every step. Collectors gather materials from homes, sorters process different recyclable types, drivers transport goods, and entrepreneurs build businesses around the recycling economy.

Community leaders, state officials, and local residents attended the opening ceremony, showing strong support for bringing environmental solutions to underserved areas. The collaboration between private foundation, government authority, and community members demonstrates how partnerships can solve challenges no single group could tackle alone.

The Masaka hub joins other recycling centers across Nigeria as part of the foundation's plan to expand sustainable waste management nationwide. Each new location helps shift attitudes about recycling from burden to opportunity.
