Electric vehicle charging station on Philadelphia street with cars plugged in

Philly to Install 800 EV Chargers in All Neighborhoods

😊 Feel Good

Philadelphia is bringing electric vehicle charging to every neighborhood with 800 new charging stations over the next decade, ending the days of residents dangling electrical cords out windows to charge their cars. Two companies will build the entire network at zero cost to the city.

Picture Philadelphia residents hanging electrical cords out of windows and snaking them across sidewalks just to charge their electric vehicles. That desperate workaround is about to become ancient history.

The city just announced ChargePHL, a partnership that will install over 800 public EV charging stations across all Philadelphia neighborhoods over the next 10 years. Right now, the city has only about 200 public chargers, and most sit in Center City.

The numbers tell the story of inequality. The average Philly resident lives half a mile from a gas station but 1.4 miles from an EV charger. Neighborhoods outside downtown have been almost completely left out of the electric vehicle revolution.

Two companies, It's Electric Inc. from Brooklyn and PositivEnergy Inc. from Miami, will design, install, and maintain the entire network. They're covering the costs through their own funding and federal grants, so Philadelphia taxpayers won't pay a dime.

The stations will pop up at curbside locations and surface parking lots throughout the city. An overnight charge will cost users around $13, making it competitive with filling up a gas tank. City planners expect the first chargers to go live in early 2027.

The Ripple Effect

This expansion goes way beyond convenience for EV owners. Motor vehicles create 60% of Philadelphia's air pollution, and the American Lung Association gives the city an F grade for air quality year after year.

More charging stations means more residents can realistically switch to electric vehicles. That shift will directly reduce the asthma and heart disease devastating Philadelphia communities, especially in neighborhoods with the worst air quality.

Councilmember Jeffery Young Jr. emphasized the importance of putting chargers where they'll create the most impact. He pointed out friends who drive Ubers with rented EVs and currently have to travel all the way to Northeast Philly just to charge up between rides.

The new traffic code changes ensure the system actually works. Parking a gas vehicle in a charging space will cost violators $150 to $300. EV drivers will need to move their cars within 20 minutes of finishing a charge, keeping spaces available for others.

Philadelphia is building infrastructure that makes clean transportation possible for everyone, not just downtown residents with private garages.
