Nearly one third of the world's population cooks their meals over wood fires, charcoal, or agricultural waste. The toxic fumes kill 3.5 million people every year from household air pollution.

Kinetic7, a clean energy company based in Abu Dhabi, just announced a breakthrough solution after six years of development. Their portable cooking stoves called Nomad and Tribe create hydrogen gas on demand using only water and a rechargeable battery.

Here's how it works: users pour in any freshwater source they have available. The stove instantly generates hydrogen through electrolysis using its built-in battery, which can recharge via solar panels or regular power outlets. The hydrogen burns cleanly for cooking and heating, producing zero emissions.

The game changer? The stoves never store hydrogen gas, making them safe for everyday use in homes. Founder Rick Parish and his team designed the technology specifically for humanitarian purposes, targeting the 900 million people in sub-Saharan Africa and 780 million in India who lack access to clean cooking options.

The Nomad stove made its debut at the 2024 Paris Summit on Clean Cooking organized by the International Energy Agency. Production begins later this year, with partnerships already forming between humanitarian agencies, governments, the United Nations, and NGOs.

This innovation tackles multiple crises at once. Families gain a safe, affordable cooking method that doesn't fill their homes with deadly smoke.
