Seattle's Re:Union Block Party Celebrates Black Heritage

Imagine an entire Seattle street transformed into one giant family reunion, complete with your favorite soul food, legendary music, and neighbors from every generation gathering to celebrate.

That's exactly what's happening at Re:Union on Union, an annual block party taking over 23rd and Union in Seattle's Central District. Hosted by Africatown Community Land Trust, the event has become a beloved tradition since 2018, welcoming thousands to honor the area's Black heritage and the community members who've called it home for decades.

This year's headliner is Surface, the multiplatinum R&B group behind timeless hits like "Shower Me With Your Love" and "The First Time." Their smooth vocals will soundtrack an afternoon filled with food, storytelling, and connection.

The menu reads like a tour of Black culinary excellence. Wally's NW Soul is serving up chicken, salmon, and macaroni and cheese. Chef Red from Come Eat Daddy brings chicken and turkey sausage gumbo. The Jerk Shack offers oxtails with rice and peas, while Moe Vegan serves BBQ mesquite "beef" brisket. Catfish Corner and Polly's Cakes & Bakes round out the feast with fried catfish and decadent desserts.

Kids get their own dedicated space called Little Roots Kids Zone, featuring free hot dogs, snow cones, cotton candy, and activities like Double Dutch, giant Jenga, and an interactive Slime Lab. Culturally relevant books from Hella Black Books ensure young readers see themselves in stories.

The Ripple Effect goes beyond just food and music. Grandma's Living Room recreates the warmth of a family matriarch's home with vintage furniture and family photographs. Paw Paw's Garage offers space for spades, dominoes, and chess. The Central District History Booth invites attendees to record their family stories and neighborhood memories for future generations.

Community organizations are on site providing real resources too. Uplift Northwest offers job training information, while HomeSight provides homebuyer education and foreclosure prevention support. Black Legacy Homeowners helps with property preservation, addressing the very real challenge of displacement facing the Central District.

The event represents something bigger than a party. It's a statement of resilience from a community fighting to maintain its presence in a rapidly changing neighborhood. By celebrating Black-owned businesses and creating space for intergenerational connection, Re:Union on Union reinforces that this community isn't going anywhere.

From DJ Uncle Guy spinning tracks at 2 PM to Surface taking the stage at 5:15 PM, the day promises to feel like coming home, whether you've lived in the Central District for decades or you're visiting for the first time.
