South Korea Partners with Punjab on Smart Farm Technology

Farmers working tiny plots of land in Punjab are about to get some powerful new tools, thanks to a growing partnership between India and South Korea that could transform agriculture for millions.

Following Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann's December visit to South Korea, a delegation from the tech-advanced nation met with Punjab officials on January 31 to discuss concrete ways to help the state's struggling small farmers. The focus is on smart farming technology, vertical farming methods, and small-scale agricultural machinery designed specifically for farmers with limited land.

The timing couldn't be better. Punjab, once the powerhouse that made India self-sufficient in food production, now faces a crisis as farmland gets divided into smaller and smaller plots through inheritance. What used to be profitable family farms have become too small to sustain families using traditional methods.

Chief Minister Mann explained the challenge clearly. "Because of fragmentation of land, farming is no longer a profitable venture for a large section of our farmers," he said during the meeting in Chandigarh.

South Korea faced this exact problem and solved it through innovation. The country developed vertical farming systems and efficient small machinery specifically because their farmers also work small plots. Now they're ready to share that expertise with Punjab.

The proposed collaboration covers automation for farm machinery, smart farming equipment, biotechnology, advanced seed technology, and modern combine harvesters and transplanters. These aren't just concepts. South Korea has already proven these technologies work at small scale.

This partnership reaches far beyond Punjab's borders. The state contributes massive amounts of grain to India's central food reserves, helping feed the nation. Making Punjab's small farms profitable again means food security for hundreds of millions of people.

The South Korean delegation responded enthusiastically to Punjab's vision, signaling that concrete partnerships could materialize soon. They've already been invited to the Progressive Punjab Investors' Summit scheduled for March 2026 in Mohali.

Punjab Agricultural University, which helped the state become food-surplus decades ago, stands ready to integrate these new technologies into local farming practices. The combination of Punjab's agricultural expertise and South Korea's technological innovation creates a powerful formula for success.
