SpaceX's Most Powerful Starship V3 Fires Up for Moon and Mars

SpaceX just brought the most powerful rocket ever built roaring to life, and it's built to carry humans to the moon and Mars.

On Monday, the company successfully conducted its first static fire test of Starship Version 3's massive first-stage booster at its South Texas facility. The engines fired briefly while the 408-foot rocket remained anchored to the newly constructed Pad 2, testing systems that could one day make humanity a multiplanetary species.

This wasn't just any test. Booster 19 represents a quantum leap in space capability, able to haul more than 100 tons to low Earth orbit compared to just 35 tons for the previous version.

The milestone also marked the first time any spacecraft had been tested at Pad 2, effectively doubling SpaceX's launch capacity at Starbase. That means more missions, more innovation, and faster progress toward ambitious space goals.

The test involved 10 of the booster's 33 next-generation Raptor engines and ended early due to a ground equipment issue, not a problem with the rocket itself. Engineers are now working to install the remaining 23 engines for a full-power static fire test before the planned April launch.

Starship V3 will fly for the first time on its 12th test mission, paired with upper stage Ship 39, which recently passed its own critical pre-flight tests. At over 400 feet tall, the complete vehicle stands taller than a 40-story building.

The Ripple Effect

This successful test ripples far beyond a single rocket firing. SpaceX is building the vehicle that NASA selected to land astronauts on the moon for the first time in over 50 years through the Artemis program.

The increased payload capacity means V3 can carry everything needed for lunar bases, Mars habitats, and the infrastructure required to sustain human life on other worlds. It's the first Starship version actually capable of reaching the moon and Mars, transforming those destinations from distant dreams into achievable goals.

The new Pad 2 facility means SpaceX can conduct twice as many launches, accelerating the testing and refinement needed to make space travel routine and reliable. Each successful test brings the vision of sustainable space exploration closer to reality.

Before V3 can attempt its first journey beyond Earth orbit, it needs to demonstrate successful orbital flight and test the ability to refuel in space, a critical capability for deep space missions. But Monday's test shows those milestones are within reach.
