Millions of Africans can now access satellite internet on their regular smartphones without buying expensive equipment. A new partnership in the Democratic Republic of Congo just made connectivity possible in the continent's most remote areas.
People living beyond the reach of cell towers in the Democratic Republic of Congo can now send messages and use apps on their regular phones, thanks to a breakthrough that connects smartphones directly to satellites.
Airtel Africa launched the service on August 14, becoming the first company in Africa to offer Starlink's satellite connection without requiring customers to buy a dish. Anyone with a compatible Android phone, an active data plan, and a clear view of the sky can now stay connected in areas where traditional cell towers don't reach.
The innovation solves a problem that has limited satellite internet across Africa since Starlink arrived. The satellite dishes required for the service cost between $200 and $700 across African markets, putting them out of reach for millions of potential users. In Kenya, the standard kit costs about $760, while Nigeria's runs around $800.
Those hardware costs created a bigger barrier than the monthly service itself. Monthly plans in Kenya start at just $20 for 50GB, competitive with local internet providers in many countries.
The direct-to-phone model changes everything. Transport companies, humanitarian workers, health clinics, farmers, and mining operations can now maintain connectivity as they move through remote regions. No equipment purchase required.

"By combining Airtel's terrestrial network with Starlink's satellite technology, we are extending essential connectivity beyond the limits of mobile infrastructure," said Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar. The service provides SMS and light-data apps like WhatsApp anywhere cellular coverage ends.
The Ripple Effect
This breakthrough reaches far beyond individual convenience. In a country as vast as the DRC, where geography means some communities have never had reliable connectivity, the impact touches education, healthcare, and economic opportunity.
Schools in remote areas can access online resources. Health workers can consult with specialists in distant cities. Farmers can check weather forecasts and market prices. Small businesses can process digital payments and communicate with suppliers.
Uganda followed quickly, with internet provider Paratus launching Starlink service for enterprises in remote areas on August 24. Kenya tested the mobile service in March and awaits regulatory approval for commercial launch.
Starlink had about 500,000 African users by the end of 2025, compared to 10 million globally. The direct-to-phone model could accelerate that growth dramatically by eliminating the hardware barrier that kept the technology out of reach for so many.
The shift shows how innovation can leapfrog traditional infrastructure, bringing 21st-century connectivity to places that never had 20th-century phone lines.
